 Into the Country

I grew up on twenty acres with all sorts of creatures. When I was still very young, my father was disabled by multiple sclerosis, so my memories of the animals he kept are childlike impressions, images and feelings without stories attached. I remember how it felt to hold a baby bottle tight while a baby goat nudged it and sucked at it, but not why we had to hand feed them. Memories of those days are vague and warm, and bundled up tight with memories of my dad, who also introduced me to art. Today my mother-in-law Margot keeps many kinds of animals, and having animals “in the family” now recalls the warmth and love and endless wonders of childhood.

The Into the Country series, features animals from my mother-in-law’s herds and flocks (and more). Portraits from the series are painted in a style inspired by the classical Dutch portrait, and continue a mood from the first miniature in the “Paintings of Rabbits” series.

I am captivated by the powerful presence an animal can have, even pictured still and without context or movement. The dark background and natural lighting is intended to personify the subject without embellishment, in a classic and dignified mood. In personal terms, the series is also a meditation on memory, childhood, and the power of nostalgia.
